One of my favorite quotes that I keep constantly in my head is “Life is like a box of chocolates” by Ernest Hemingway. I’m paraphrasing slightly. The sentiment here is that life is a lot like a box of chocolates. Your life is filled with boxes of different flavors, and it can feel a little overwhelming at times.
That is the exact opposite of what Andy Serkis has said in his latest trailer for his upcoming film ‘Hem’ which looks as vibrant and murderous as ever. It’s a very sweet reminder that life is more than just boxes of chocolate.
Another of Andy’s quotes comes from his movie The Beach which we were shown a few days ago. Andy Serkis has said, “In the first act, you’re like, ‘I am a box of chocolates.’ And then you’re like, ‘Well, chocolates don’t have memories.’ But that’s not true. You can’t be like, ‘It’s just a box of chocolates.’ That’s not the point.
The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
Serkis is using the quote as a metaphor for how we think our self-awareness is. He also said, “In the first act, youre like, I am a box of chocolates. And then youre like, Well, chocolates dont have memories. But thats not true. You cant be like, Its just a box of chocolates. Thats not the point. The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot.
In the beginning of the trailer, we also see Colt going into his new identity as the character of Blackreef. So while that looks cool, it’s really more of a metaphor for the mindset of the people who live on the island. When its just you, you’re like, “Well, why don’t we just kill this guy?” but that can’t be true.
Ok, so the truth is that your memories are pretty easy to forget. I mean, if you dont have any, you probably wouldn’t even know why you’re on Deathloop. But since they are so easily forgotten, maybe that is the point. Colt’s point is that he doesn’t remember dying, but thats not a problem. Because we can all remember that we died, but we aren’t really able to remember why.
I’m not sure why I think that’s a bad quote in general. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. You can’t really remember what you did the day you died. Well, you can, but you can’t really remember why you died.
A person with a high death-rate would surely remember why they died, so it would make sense that a person with a low death-rate would forget why they died. The same goes for a person with a low death-rate and a high death-rate, so why is it a bad thing to say.
That’s the first thing that came to mind as I first saw the trailer. It does make perfect sense that a person with a high death-rate would remember why they died, because they would have had an awful experience having to face their own mortality. But then I thought about it. Even if a person with a high death-rate does remember why they died, they still don’t necessarily have the same control over their own death as a person with a low death-rate.
