The fact is, we can’t anticipate everything and every situation. We get so distracted by the next thing that we miss the one we’re already anticipating.
Yes, there are some things that we don’t want to do, but there are even some things we want to do, and that’s the same thing. Just because something isn’t on our list doesn’t mean that we’re against it, or that we don’t want to do it. The thing we don’t want to do is not something that we would actually want to do, so if we’re not doing it, that’s not the problem.
We can get distracted by the next thing because we do not realize we are distracted. We are really not paying attention, so when something pops up, we miss the fact that we are really not paying attention. This is called “pre-attention.” It is one of the things that can make it so that we miss the fact we are being preoccupied.

Pre-attention may come in the form of visual or auditory stimulation. For instance, you may find yourself watching a movie with your TV turned off. Or, you might be reading a book. You may even be reading a book while doing a crossword. In all of these cases, we are being preoccupied with the next thing. In each case, we are being preoccupied with the next thing because we are not paying attention to the fact that we are being preoccupied.
This is one of the most important things – or rather the easiest thing to forget – about any kind of self-awareness. We don’t have to be preoccupied with the world around us to be preoccupied with ourselves. We don’t need to be preoccupied with thoughts, perceptions, emotions, and memories to be preoccupied with ourselves. We are always preoccupied with ourselves because we are always preoccupied with ourselves.
We are preoccupied with ourselves because we are preoccupied with ourselves. Every time we say, “I am preoccupied with myself”, we are saying, “I am preoccupied with something or some emotion or perception.
One of the biggest things that can keep us from being able to be preoccupied with ourselves is the idea that we are preoccupied with ourselves. We are often so preoccupied with ourselves that our minds are in a constant loop of, “I am preoccupied with myself… I am preoccupied with myself…” and this keeps us from being preoccupied with ourselves.
This thought process is not true. We are preoccupied with ourselves. And if we are preoccupied with ourselves, then we are probably in a constant state of anxiety. Being anxious is not about being preoccupied with ourselves. It’s about being more preoccupied with the anxiety that’s in our lives. So being anxious about something, being preoccupied with something, might be good for your life but it won’t help you be preoccupied with yourself.
